Trophies not only stand for victory but also provide people with memories of the accomplishment and act as a memento for them. It gives the beholder the passion to do even better and encourages him or her. Historically, trophies stood for success against enemies and were built in a war field by the victor. The practice started in ancient Greece when the battle descriptions were inscribed on the enemy’s artillery and were displayed by the winning army as marks of victory. These were given as offerings to the gods who had brought them success. In fact the word trophy has been derived from the term ‘tropaion’, which is the Greek word for ‘defeat’.

Romans had their own unique way of displaying their victory through trophies. They used large pillars with the trophies positioned high up for showing off a glorious victory to everyone. After sometime, the kings and monarchs started distributing cups to the best performing sportsmen in the kingdom.

Designing a trophy is not as simple as it might look at first. Like other design fields, it requires market research and detailed study of the material to be used and also a thorough analysis. A trophy should not just be remarkable but also strong enough to remain safe for decades as a prized possession of the recipient.

Nowadays, trophies are awarded for excellent performance in several fields such as sports, academics, business etc. Trophies come in myriad designs, shapes and with various provisions for inscriptions. Traditionally used metal statuette over a wooden base is not the only choice nowadays. You can also find trophies in glass, silver and gold finish, and even crystal or fibre trophy.
