Forty years ago, when I was growing up, I did not know anyone who talked about designer clothing and I am fairly certain that I did not know anyone who wore it. Our family did not have a lot of money, but I do not think that that was the reason why. We were just not so ‘clothes conscious’ in those days, I think. We just put on what our mothers gave us to wear and went out – to school or wherever. Our clothes were always clean and our jumpers or sweaters were usually knitted by my mother, an aunt or a grandmother
