Nurse practitioners are registered nurses that have had graduate level training to diagnose and treat many medical conditions. They may be thought of as the primary healthcare provider for the patient. These nurses really play an important role in the system of our healthcare. Nurse practitioner jobs range from doctors offices to emergency rooms to hospice care.
Nurse practitioners are licensed by the state in which they work and hold certification from one of many national boards. They are educated to care for patients with both common and complex illnesses and injuries, depending on which area they specialize in.
Depending upon the state in which a nurse practitioner is licensed, he or she may work independently or in collaboration with a physician. Some states require nurse practitioners be directly supervised by a licensed physician, while other states allow them to practice without direct supervision. Many nurse practitioners are employed by physicians and see patients in their offices just like any other physician.
A nurse practitioner is trained to evaluate any healthcare history, they give physical exams and recommend any testing or therapy that may be required. They are also permitted to prescribe medications, however the type of medications that may be prescribed by a nurse practitioner is limited in some states. With advanced training and supervision, nurse practitioners may assist physicians in surgical procedures.
To become a nurse practitioner an individual must first pass the coursework required to become a registered nurse. Not until then can they sign up in a program at the graduate or doctoral level, specifically for a nurse practitioner. The first program for a nurse practitioner was started at the University of Colorado in 1965, and ever since most colleges and universities all though the United States offer this program.
Nurse practitioners are often thought of as the primary care provider for the patient, if that is their area of specialty. Nurse practitioners may specialize in pediatrics, adult care, acute care, or psychiatric care. It is not unusual to find nurse practitioners in college and university clinics and public health clinics; however, they may be employed by nursing homes and hospice care.
A nurse practitioner may involve the patient and members of their family in the treatment they prescribe; nurses are trained in preventative and holistic care. They often want the patient to be involved in the decisions about their care. They do this the the patient feels as if they are playing an active role in their healthcare. Nurse practitioners have been taught to know the scope of their practice and if a patient needs care outside their abilities, they will refer the patent to the appropriate healthcare provider.
Nurse practitioners have become a vital part of healthcare in the United States and nurse practitioners now often fill travel nurse jobs that were filled only by physicians in the past. There are different types of nurse practitioner jobs ranging from emergency rooms and urgent care facilities to nursing homes and hospice care. Nurse practitioners provide services that are indispensable to our health care system.
